Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some questions that people might have and the answers. If you don't find your answer here, just email us here and we'll answer just as fast as an electron can go from here to there :-) After you read the questions and answers, go ahead and begin if you like.

Can ALL noises be removed?

Answer:You wouldn't want ALL noises removed because some noises become embedded in the music and that part of the music would be lost. We always try to "strike a balance" so some noises will HAVE to stay in.

Can ANY recording media be recovered?

Answer: The C.I.A. may be able to recover ANYTHING, but we can't:-) What we do is evaluate ALL incoming media and if there's a problem we'll contact you. (To avoid problems, please don't send an obviously damaged piece of media.) Of course, damaged music isn't usually evident until it's played. In that case, we'll contact you. You can't "make a silk purse from a sow's ear", so if a particular piece of music is damaged, and you can't find another recording, you're pretty much "out of luck".

"Bottom Line" is, we'll try our "darnedest" to get the job done!

Can I get multiple copies?

Answer:This is a complex area, the reason "Copyright attorney's exist.:-) In general, you only have to consider Copyright law if your recording is something that's not in the "Public Domain". (music that's older than 75 years would be in the Public Domain) and you want copies.

You'll have to work out any "multiple copy" arrangements with the Copyright Holder (or anything else out of the ordinary) and then send us (in hardcopy) the paper-work so we can have it on file. Then and only then, can we make multiple copies (and there'll be a reasonable fee for the extra copies.) In general YOU are responsible for keeping to the law. If you use our service as it's intended, that is to have your music put onto CD's for your own use, you'll have no problems. Of course, audio material (like an old "letter to home" record or maybe uncle Charlie playing his fiddle ) that  is not actually owned by somebody else, can be copied as many times as you like with no paperwork involved.

NB: I'm NOT an attorney so I can't give advice.

How long does this take?

Answer: Usually, from the time we receive your package, we should be finished and shipping within 10 days if there are no problems. If we are exceptionally busy, or there are problems, it may take a bit longer.

What does the finished CD actually look like?

Answer: Each CD comes  with a solid color label with the song titles on it. The CD will be in a "slimline" jewel case.

There will be an "insert" in the jewelcase front in the event that you're going by the hour or if you've purchased that option to the "basic" service. That insert will either be a "scanned" album cover or a picture of your choice.

Isn't copying music against the law?

Answer: No, Copyright law allows you to copy music that you have bought or own, onto any form of media (CD in this case) as long as you keep that copy for your own personal use.

How do you handle shipping?

Answer: You ship the package here by any carrier you want. We'll do the work and send it back probably via the U.S. Postal Service Priority. Upon receiving your package, we'll figure the total charges (including shipping)  and email that to you. Your package will be shipped when that's received.

hint: The Post Office will GIVE you a box to ship in if you ship PRIORITY.

Which noises can be removed?

Answer: From records we can remove "background noise" , "click/pops" (caused mostly by scratches and embedded dirt) and most other anomalies common to records. From tape, we can remove "hiss" and most other unwanted noises. Some noise just HAS to stay, if we took out ALL of it, sometimes very little wanted sound would remain.

What's the difference between with and without "noise reduction"?

Answer: What is meant by "with noise reduction" is that we perform a procedure on the music using software that reduces and/or eliminates the noise content. By "without noise reduction", we refer to a simple procedure where the music is copied directly to a CD with NO processing by any software. The music sounds EXACTLY the same as it did before. Clearly, most people who use our service will want their music processed "with noise reduction".

Why are your prices so low?

Answer: Our "overhead" is very low and as a famous TV cop used to say: "and that's the name of THAT tune!"

What about insurance?

Answer: Insurance is strictly up to you. You can insure your package for whatever you want and if you want insurance on the return shipment, please let us know on the Order Form.

What is "CD-text"? Is it important? Do you use it?

Answer: Simply stated, "CD-text"  merely allows whoever is "burning" an Audio CD to put some alphabetical information onto the CD with the music. Right now, the only information added is "Song title and Artist". Not all players support this relatively new feature (in fact, very few) and to be honest, it has absolutely no impact on the quality of a CD, the music sounds exactly the same with or without it. But yes, we DO write the information on your CD so that if the CD is ever played on a "new" player, you'll see the information displayed. This MAY be important to you and NO, not all Audio Restoration businesses write this information on the CD.

Can I send you a copy and have a CD made from it?

Answer: Well, if the tape is a copy of a record or something that you bought yourself or you actually own (I'm assuming you copied something onto a tape) or the copy is of music that is in the "public domain" or you own the Copyright, then the answer is yes. If the copy is of a friend or relative's LP or whatever, the answer is no.  Of course, if the music is actually yours, like a recording of YOUR band performing something original, you can do anything you want with it. In general, if you simply send us some music that you own, we can make a CD containing the songs on that media for your own use. This is about as much about "Copyright Law" as the average person needs to know.

Be aware that although we WILL work with a copy of YOUR legally owned music, we much prefer to perform our service using the ORIGINAL media. The results are much better and Copyright questions are averted.

Which "blank CD's" do you use? Are they any good? Will they last?

Answer: We use "Mitsui Silver" CD-R blanks. They are excellent and among the best in the world. If you need your CD to last "hundreds of years" (for instance, if you work for the "library of Congress"), we can use "Mitsui Gold" for an additional fee.

How come your website isn't "fancy"?

Answer: On the Internet, all are not equal, all computers don't have a fast, broadband connection. Graphics and other fancy things take time to load on a slower connection, therefore we endeavor to keep those things at a minimum in order to save you time.
